Singapore SE Asia's Jewel
SE Asia's Jewel

In late March, 1997, we (I'm Glenn, in case you didn't arrive here via my home page) first flew into Singapore on our way to Tioman Island, Malaysia. Although we had been there before and were just " passing through," we really enjoyed our stay there. You might not want to spend an entire vacation in Singapore, but it certainly is a pleasant place to spend a few days. In fact, If I ever left Tokyo, I wouldn't mind living there for a while. But then, what would I do for a living there?

I notice I've been getting a lot of hits on these pages recently from Singaporeans. If you're one of them, you certainly have a beautiful city.

Merlion The Merlion is of course the symbol of Singapore, so you'll find him everywhere. But the real Merlion is here at the end of the Singapore River. Did you notice him there at the tip?
The River Quay area had really grown up since the last time we'd been to Singapore. Now it's quite the trendy entertainment area.

Satay A satay stand - we love satay! Skewered and roasted chicken, beef, or mutton, dipped in spicy peanut sauce - truly heavenly.
Singapore is famous for its high population density and consequently its apartment blocks. But not everyone knows how bizarre some of them can get!

Skyway A nice way to spend the day is to take the gondola out to the amusement park on Sentosa Island, just off the southern coast of Singapore.
From Sentosa you get a nice view of the Singapore skyline.

Food As many tourists do, we headed down to Chinatown, where there are some colorful eateries. Unfortunately, we found that Chinatown was much smaller than it had been the last time we were there.
Some of the old Chinese hotels looked beautiful - possibly much better than in the day!

Of course this quick look at Singapore doesn't do such a complex and interesting city much justice - I haven't even mentioned Little India, for example. Why don't you take a trip to Singapore and see it for yourself?
