hi
Phangnga &
Ko Phi Phi
|
|
|
We didn't spend the whole
time lounging around the beach - we also took some day trips.
One day we rented a car and went for a drive around the island,
one day we went to Phangna, another we went to Koh Phi Phi, and
two other days I went diving. On this page I'll show you some
of those day trips.
|
|
I didn't put it on the map above, but if you
go down the coast to the southern tip of the island you find this
bay, called Nai Harn. It really is a lovely setting and it has
a resort just visible at center right in this picture. There isn't
much else around, however, as you can see. So this would be a
good place for people hoping to get away from it all. |
| As I said, one other day we took a daytrip
to Phangnga, situated about an hour drive north of Phuket Island
on the mainland. It's famous for these huge pinnacles of limestone
jutting straight out of the sea. I'd never seen anything like
it - truly majestic. |
|
 |
They cruise you around the area for an hour
or so, through hundreds of these limestone formations. The trip
includes a stop at "James Bond Island," where they'll
never let you forget that the movie "The Man with the Golden
Gun" was shot. I'm not including any shots of it here, so
if you want to see it, off to the video rental store you go. |
| Next they took us to what used to be a fishing
village, but has long since turned into the lunch stop for the
sightseeing boats. Of course you feel herded and processed to
a degree, but the food was OK, the waitpeople friendly, and the
scenery fantastic. |
|
 |
Another day we took a cruise to Phi Phi Island.
We had to get up quite early to take the ferry over. On the way,
just before we got to Phi Phi, they docked at what I know now
was Phi Phi Don Island. The island has this fantastic cave in
which swallows' nests are harvested for bird nest soup. |
| Then we were over to Phi Phi Lea island for
lunch and some snorkeling. Doing Koh Phi Phi as a day trip is
possible, but really too ambitious. We promised ourselves to come
back some day to spend a little more time, and two years later
we did. If you want to see what it was like, just click the link
below. |

 |
Can you tell what this is? One day they took
me to a dive site called "shark point," and I got this
picture of two spotted sharks lying on the bottom. I thought I
was looking at a scene of mourning, but when I got to the top
the divemaster told me that it was actually shark foreplay. Hmm,
maybe it was lucky we got out when we did . . . |
| Anyway, that's it for my tour of
Phuket and vicinity. A lot of people have been emailing me asking
me where they should spend their vacations. To each his own, but
I'd say that if you've got a minimum of two weeks, a Phuket, Phi
Phi, Krabi swing with a day trip to Phangnga would be pretty hard
to beat. |
